Hokies pick up first dual win of season

Blacksburg – Virginia Tech wrestling garnered its first dual meet victory of the season, dismantling visiting Gardner-Webb 35-6. Tech won eight matches to finish out the dual weekend.
 
The Hokies (1-1, 0-0 ACC) picked up five bonus points victories in eight matches en route to a dominating performance in Cassell Coliseum Saturday afternoon over the Running Bulldogs (1-1). Hunter Bolen picked up his team-leading sixth bonus point victory to improve his record to 7-0 on the season.
 
Match Notes

  • No. 12 Sam Latona bounced back after Friday night's loss with a second period fall over Aedyn Concepcion to pick up his first bonus point victory of the season. The 2021 All-American improves his season record to 3-2.
  • Collin Gerardi had a chess match of a performance with a 1-0 victory over Trevon Majette. The shutout victory improves Gerardi's record to 5-1 this season.
  • True Freshman Kylan Montgomery made his Cassell – and career – debut in gritty fashion. Montgomery picked up two nearfall points with one minute left in the match and finished with a rideout to pull out the 5-2 victory.
  • No. 29 Connor Brady went 2-0 on the weekend, this time pouring on points to finish with a major decision victory. The Powell, OH native improves to 7-1 on the season.
  • No. 4 Mekhi Lewis followed up a top-10 victory with a 19-6 technical fall Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the 2019 national champion to 6-0 campaign.
  • No. 9 Hunter Bolen picked up his sixth bonus victory of the season with a 18-2 technical fall. The win caps off an undefeated weekend for the Hokie.
  • Dakota Howard put together a comeback victory in true fashion – pulling away 10-7 in the final minute after trailing 6-5.
  • No. 14 Nathan Traxler got his first win in Cassell Coliseum since arriving in Blacksburg from Palo Alto in dominating fashion. The transfer redshirt senior picked up a fall in the first to cap off the dual.
