What to Watch: Virginia Tech at Boston College

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football travels to Boston College for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff Friday on ESPN2. The Hokies are coming off a 26-17 win at Georgia Tech last Saturday.

The Hokies (4-4, 2-2 ACC) handed the Eagles (4-4, 0-4 ACC) a 40-14 decision when the teams met last season at Lane Stadium. Tech is 19-10 all-time against Boston College, including a 3-2 mark under head coach Justin Fuente.

Last week's top performers:

  • WR Tré Turner recorded seven receptions for a career-high 187 yards with a 69-yard touchdown, the longest of his career. It was the fifth-most receiving yards by a Tech player since 1987 and the second-most by an ACC player this season. Saturday's performance earned Turner ACC Wide Receiver of the Week honors, as well as Reese's Senior Bowl Offensive Player of the Week and a spot on PFF College's Team of the Week.
  • RB Malachi Thomas went over 100 yards rushing for the second straight week with a 103-yard performance at Georgia Tech. The Hartwell, Georgia native is Tech's first true freshman running back to post back-to-back 100-yard rushing games since Kevin Jones did it vs. Virginia (11/17/01) and Miami (12/1/01).
  • WR Tayvion Robinson became the 16th Tech receiver to total 100 career receptions with four against the Yellow Jackets, including a four-yard TD reception. Robinson leads the team in receiving touchdowns with four which is a single-season career high for the Virginia Beach, Virginia product.
  • DE Jaylen Griffin forced his second career fumble on a five-yard strip sack, which was recovered by S Nasir Peoples, the first of his career. The turnover was the first of two forced by the Hokies' defense Saturday.
  • CB Armani Chatman recorded his first career interception with three minutes remaining in the game, which allowed the offense to run out the rest of the clock to seal the 26-17 road victory. Chatman is tied for the team lead in passes defensed with CB Jermaine Waller at six.
  • QB Braxton Burmeister completed 15 of 25 passes for a career-high 254 yards with two touchdowns. His 69-yard TD pass to Turner was also the longest of his career.
  • LB Alan Tisdale led the team with 12 tackles against the Yellow Jackets and now leads team with 65 on the season. The Greensboro, North Carolina native ranks ninth in the ACC averaging 8.1 tackles per game.
  • K John Parker Romo made a career-high four field goals in Atlanta. The senior has made 10 of 13 field goals this season including four of five from 40+ yards.
  • BC WR Zay Flowers hauled in six receptions for 116 yards in a loss at Syracuse.
  • BC LB Vinny DePalma led the team with 11 tackles including 1.0 TFL at Syracuse.

 What to watch for Friday:

  • The Hokies are looking for their second Friday night win this season after defeating then-No. 10 North Carolina 17-10 on Sept. 3 in Lane Stadium.
  • Entering Friday night's game, Tech has racked up back-to-back 200-yard rushing games for a total of 497 rushing yards in that span.
  • Friday's matchup features two of the top three passing defenses in the ACC. BC is No. 1 in the conference allowing just 174.0 passing yards per game, while Tech is No. 3 at 200.5 ypg.
  • The Hokies lead the Power Five for fewest penalties, accumulating just 31 flags for 266 penalty yards through eight games.
  • WR Tré Turner is currently sixth in both career receptions (128) and career receiving yards (2,219) in Tech history. Turner needs six more receptions to pass Bucky Hodges (133) and 54 more receiving yards to pass Ricky Scales (2,272) for fifth in both categories.
  • WR Tayvion Robinson's 244 punt return yards lead the ACC, are sixth in the FBS and fourth among Power Five players. His 13.3-yard punt return average is also seventh in the country.
  • BC RB Pat Garwo leads the Eagles in rushing, totaling 116 carries for 689 yards with five touchdowns this season. His 86.1 rushing yards per game ranks fourth in the conference.
  • BC LB Isaiah Graham-Mobley leads the team with 46 tackles this season including 1.5 TFL.
