Alleyne, Aluma power Tech to 85-55 win over Saint Francis (Pa.)

BLACKSBURG, VA -- The Virginia Tech men's basketball team got a 34-point showing from the bench on the way to an 85-55 victory over the Saint Francis (Pa.) Red Flash at home Thursday night.

The Hokies (4-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Keve Aluma and Nahiem Alleyne, who both contributed 18 points. Darius Maddox chipped in a career-high 11 points off the bench.

Led by Aluma's two offensive rebounds, Virginia Tech did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 17 second-chance points.

The Virginia Tech defense held Saint Francis to only 33.3 percent from the field, including 26.1 percent from 3-point range. The Hokies also kept Ronell Giles, Jr. to 3-of-14 shooting and seven points in the game.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 23-22 advantage, Virginia Tech went on an 11-0 run with 2:57 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Maddox, to increase its lead to 34-22, a score that would hold until halftime. The Hokies got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 34 total points.

Following intermission, Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 67-48 before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 75-48 with 2:43 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 85-55 win. Tech got a boost from its bench in the period, as it accounted for 24 of its 51 total points in the second stanza.
