Defensive effort leads Virginia Tech over Coppin State 85-32

BLACKSBURG, VA --Virginia Tech held Coppin State to only 19.6 percent shooting from the field and the Hokies defeated the Lady Eagles 85-32 at home Wednesday.

The Hokies (4-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Aisha Sheppard, who had 17 points and six rebounds. Kayana Traylor tacked on 15 points off of the bench and Elizabeth Kitley helped out with a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Virginia Tech offense was strong from beyond the arc, knocking down 13 threes on 34 attempts. Sheppard hit four treys for the Hokies in the contest.

Virginia Tech's defense held Coppin State to only 13.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 19.6 percent from the field. The Lady Eagles did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed seven second chance points while Virginia Tech cleared 38 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 4-2 advantage, Virginia Tech went on an 18-0 run with 8:53 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Traylor, to increase its lead to 22-2. The Hokies then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 26-4 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 26 points.

Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:10 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kitley, to increase its lead to 32-6. The Hokies proceeded to tack on four points to that lead and enjoyed a 42-12 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

Virginia Tech wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Sheppard, to expand its lead further to 50-12 with 8:23 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hokies added nine points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 70-23 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to score 15 of its 28 total points.

Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 13-0 run, finished off by Taylor Geiman's jumper, to grow the lead to 85-32 with two seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
