Tech is 2-0 for the sixth straight season after a resounding 75-38 victory at George Washington Thursday evening where the Hokies got a historic performance from center Elizabeth Kitley. The 6-foot-6 junior began the game by making her first seven field goals, scoring all of the Hokies' points by the first quarter media timeout at 3:01.
She would go on the score 34, topping her previous career-high of 30 and threatening the school record of 38.
Kitley's 17 made field goals are a new program record. She was an efficient 17 of 21 in the game where she was also the top rebounder with nine and she blocked two shots.
SHARING IS CARING
In Thursday's game, Tech assisted on 21 of their 32 baskets (66%) and on the young season, their assist rate is 59%.
PG Georgia Amoore has dished out six assists in both games this season to lead the Hokies in that category, just the third time in her career that she has recorded consecutive games with six or more dimes.
Aisha Sheppard tied her career-high with six helpers in the win against the Colonials and has 10 already on the season.
VT's assist to turnover ratio is stellar as well at 1.6 through two contests.
EVERYONE CONTRIBUTING ON THE BOARDS
In the nation's capital, 10 Hokies hit the floor and all 10 grabbed at least one rebound. It was the first time since the Gardner-Webb game last season (11 players) that so many individuals had each recorded a rebound.
Kitley led the squad again with nine, while Cayla King grabbed a career-best eight rebounds. Emily Lytle contributed six off of the bench.
SIMILAR PRODUCTIOIN BOTH CONTESTS
So far, the Hokies have been consistent, maybe not in the manner in which they've scored buckets, but in their point total and production from the bench.
In the season opener at Cassell, Tech nailed 15 3's and connected on 14 FGs inside the arc. Last night in DC, the Hokies did most of their damage closer to the rim scoring 23 FGs inside the 3-point line.
In both contests, three Hokies scored in double figures, with Sheppard (25 and 10) and Kayana Traylor (18 and 11) both scoring 10+. Amoore scored 10 in the opener, and Kitley went for 34 at against the Colonials.
In game 1, VT scored 76: starters 54, bench 22.
In game 2, VT scored 75: starters 58, bench 17.
