Kitley scores career-high 34 points in Virginia Tech's 75-38 win over George Washington

WASHINGTON, DC --Elizabeth Kitley totaled 34 points to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team over the George Washington Colonials 75-38 on the road Thursday.

The Hokies (2-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Kitley, who had 34 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Kayana Traylor added 11 points from the bench and Aisha Sheppard chipped in as well with 10 points, six assists and three steals.

Virginia Tech out-rebounded George Washington 39-26 in Thursday's game, paced by Kitley's nine boards.

How It Happened

Virginia Tech started off strong, putting together a 19-14 lead heading into the second quarter.

Virginia Tech built that first quarter lead to 26-20 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 2:58 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kitley, to increase its lead to 35-20. The Colonials cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 35-23 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 12-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kitley, to expand its lead further to 53-30 with 2:10 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hokies added six points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 61-32 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 26 total points.

Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 66-35 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kitley's jumper, to grow the lead to 71-35 with 6:22 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 75-38 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
