The Virginia Tech women's basketball team shot 50% from beyond the arc on the way to a 76-57 win against the Davidson Wildcats at home Tuesday.

The Hokies (1-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Aisha Sheppard, who had 25 points and four assists. Kayana Traylor added 18 points and two steals from the bench and Georgia Amoore helped out with 10 points and six assists.

Virginia Tech shared the ball well in Tuesday's game, racking up 15 assists on 29 made field goals. Individually, Amoore led the way for the Hokies with six assists.

The Virginia Tech defense held Davidson shooters to only 31.7 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 4-2 advantage, Virginia Tech went on a 13-0 run with 6:16 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Traylor, to increase its lead to 17-2. The Hokies then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 21-5 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.

Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 3:24 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Traylor, to increase its lead to 41-20. The Hokies proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 46-22 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 25 points.

Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Amoore, to expand its lead further to 65-44 with three seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Virginia Tech knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to score 15 of its 19 total points.

Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Azana Baines' jumper, to grow the lead to 72-48 with 5:47 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-57 win. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
