Both the men's and women's squads will compete against more than 35 teams from the region consisting of schools from Virginia, Kentucky, and the Carolinas. Joining Tech at this year's Regionals are six other ACC programs: Duke, Louisville, UNC, NC State, Virginia, and Wake Forest.

Hosted by Kentucky, Friday's NCAA Southeast Regional will be held at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Anchorage, just outside of Louisville. As per NCAA championship rules, the women will run 6,000 meters and the men will run a 10k, up from the 8k ran in the men's ACC Championship.

For automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships, the Hokies must finish as one of the top two teams in the region. At-large bids are handed out to 13 other teams from across the country. Individual qualification depends on placement in the race and which teams qualify for the national meet. The top four individuals to finish at the regional meet that are not members of the top two finishing programs earn qualification to the NCAA Championships.

Tech hopes to continue its momentum from the ACC Championships two weeks ago, where Lindsey Butler finished 15th and earned all-conference honors. Ben Fleming led the men's team with a 25th place finish.
