Labovitz named first team All-ACC, Kinyua and Flores pick up honors

Opens in a new window ACC Release

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three members of the Virginia Tech men's soccer team – Jacob Labovitz, Mayola Kinyua and Danny Flores – received All-ACC honors on Wednesday.

Labovitz, Tech's leading scorer with eight goals, was named first team All-ACC. The senior tallied four assists to complement his goal scoring number, as well. His numbers are impressive, but Labovitz's timing makes him even more of an attacking threat. Two of his goals were game winners, including the double overtime winner against rivals Virginia on Sept. 17.

On Sept. 21, Labovitz was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week for his two-goal performance against the Cavaliers. He earned third team All-ACC honors following the 2020-21 season. Before coming to Virginia Tech, Labovitz was the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year at Fairleigh Dickinson.

With his third team All-ACC nod, Kinyua earned the first all-conference honors of his career. The midfielder had one assist throughout the regular season, but his defensive contributions provide much more than what stats in the box score represent.

Through Tech's midseason seven-game unbeaten streak, Kinyua played in 643 of 677 (94.9%) minutes – anchoring the midfield. The Nairobi, Kenya native started all 15 games before being sidelined with an injury in late October.

Flores was named to the All-Freshman team for his one goal and three assists during the regular season. The Half Moon Bay, Calif. native started 17 games so far this season for the Hokies, filling a box-to-box role that was left open by Daniel Pereira's early departure to the MLS.

Many of Flores' contributions have been under-the-radar, but he made his presence known on Sept. 24 with his spectacular dribbling effort in the box that resulted in a game winning overtime goal against Notre Dame. In October, Flores was named the No. 3 freshman in the country by Top Drawer Soccer.

With his recognition, Labovitz becomes the seventh player in program history to be named first team All-ACC, while Flores is the seventh player from Virginia Tech to be named to the All-Freshman team. Kinyua is the third player from Tech to be named third team All-ACC.

This is the second year in a row that three Virginia Tech players have received all-conference honors.
