CLEMSON, S.C. – Chasing the equalizing goal for most of Thursday night's match, the No. 17 Virginia Tech women's soccer team was unable to flip the score at Clemson as the Hokies were defeated, 1-0, by the Tigers at Historic Riggs Field.
Virignia Tech (8-3-2, 2-1-2 ACC) witnessed its six-match unbeaten streak come to an end at the hand of Clemson (8-4-0, 3-2-0 ACC), which notched its fourth consecutive series victory. The Tigers played Tech down to a season low for attempts on target (two) while inducing the Hokies' first match-opening concession to date during their ACC schedule.
Eight minutes into the match, Nicole Kozlova and Tori Powell presented Tech with what ultimately became one of its best scoring opportunities of the night. On a counter through the middle third, Kozlova sent Powell on a curling run down the left flank, resulting in Powell's contested attempt that was saved high by Hensley Hancuff.
Clemson's Morris sisters – Makenna and Maliah – united to put the Hokies behind during the 18th minute. After Maliah had sent a right-to-left cross into the Tigers' 18-yard box, Makenna headed a teardrop over Alia Skinner that dipped into the top left corner of the frame for the lone goal of the match.
Despite its 6-5 edge in second half attempts, Tech struggled to find the look it needed to even up the score with Clemson. With the Hokies still trailing during the 80th minute, Kozlova used two dekes to set up her chance at the match-tying goal, but her right-footed attempt proceeded to hook outside the left post.
Tech held the attacking advantage inside the final 15 minutes of play, during which the Hokies attempted three of their six corners.
