BLACKSBURG — For already the third time this season, the Virginia Tech men's golf team will hit the road for the Tar Heel state. This time, the Hokies will set their sights on Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate for their fourth tournament of the 2021-22 campaign.
The event will be contested at Lonnie Poole Golf Course from Oct. 16-17 on the campus of NC State University, and including Tech, will feature 16 schools highlighted by the host No. 45 Wolfpack and No. 48 Cincinnati. In-state foes George Mason and James Madison will also travel for the 54-hole tournament as well.
The Hokies are coming off a ninth-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by East Tennessee State this past week. Senior Connor Burgess shot an 8-under 64 on the third day of competition to tie a Virginia Tech single-round record for lowest 18-hole score. The Lynchburg, Virginia native totaled seven birdies and an eagle to finish 8-under in the final round. He became the fifth Tech men's golfer to shoot 64, joining Daniel Azallion, Sarit Suwannarut, Scott Vincent and Johnson Wagner.
Additionally, Burgess tied for ninth in the tournament after shooting even par (72) the first two days of the three-day event.
Head coach Brian Sharp will send out his third different lineup so far this season for the upcoming weekend. In addition to Burgess and Azallion, senior Drew Brockwell, sophomore Charlie Hanson and freshman David Stanford will tee it up in Raleigh. Sophomore Kobe Valociek will compete as an individual.
Tee times for the first round begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with the Hokies paired with UNC Greensboro and Campbell.
