JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – With Connor Burgess tying the program's single-round scoring record (64) on Tuesday, the Virginia Tech men's golf team rallied to place ninth at the 23rd annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, as hosted by East Tennessee State at the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges.
Even to par through 36 holes, Burgess shot an 8-under 64 during the final round to help the Hokies' cause, pocketing an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole to go along with his seven birdies and a bogey. The Tech senior (72-72-64) shared in school history while posting the lowest round of the day across the 15-team field.
Charlie Hanson birdied three of the four par-5 holes on Tuesday, and despite ending his round on a bogey, shot a 1-under 71 to finish 2-under for the week as an individual. Drew Brockwell (1-under 71) joined Burgess and Hanson in red figures during Tuesday's final round while Daniel Azallion finished 1-under par for the tournament, closing with his 2-over 74.
As a team, Virginia Tech scored a 2-under 286 during the final round, ending the event in sole possession of ninth place (283-283-286). East Tennessee State (277-275-277) championed its home event with its combined score of 35-under – six strokes ahead of both second-place Charlotte (280-278-277) and Louisville (277-277-281).
