Volleyball heads to Boston College and Syracuse

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech volleyball team hits the road for its first ACC matchups away from Blacksburg, making the trip north to take on Boston College on Friday and Syracuse on Sunday. Friday's match is set for 8 p.m. while first serve on Sunday is at 1 p.m.
 
THINGS TO KNOW
 
Scouting Boston College
 
The Eagles enter Friday's match with an 11-5 record and a 1-1 clip in ACC play. Boston College jumped out to an 8-0 start to the 2021 season before falling to St. John's on the road. Opening up ACC play last weekend, BC took a 3-1 win over Syracuse before falling to Duke 3-0. Clare Naughton is the offensive leader for the Eagles, recording a team-high 232.5 points, 212 kills, 4.01 points per set and 3.66 kills per set. At the net, Amaka Chukwujekwu has 60 total blocks, averaging a block per set this season. Defensively, Anna Murphy leads the way with 225 digs, good for 3.95 digs per set.
 
Scouting Syracuse
 
Syracuse will take on Wake Forest Friday night before hosting the Hokies on Sunday. The Orange are 12-2 on the season, posting notable wins over Iowa (3-1) and Mississippi State (3-1). Syracuse's two losses come at the hands of Iowa State (3-2) and Boston College (3-1) to open ACC play. Marina Markova and Polina Shemanova provide the offensive spark, recording 261 and 255.5 points, respectively. Markova also leads the team in points per set (5.12), kills (233) and kills per set (4.57). The junior is also hitting .375 on the season. Four Syracuse players have over 100 digs as Shemanova leads the way with 179. Yulija Yastrub (158), Elena Karakasi (107), and Markova (101) round out the stat sheet.
 
Blocksburg
 
The Hokies are currently ranked 12th in the NCAA in total team blocks with 138.5, good for first in the conference. Angel Robinson and Tasha Vipond play a big role in those numbers, as Robinson has recorded 60 blocks and Vipond adds 57. Robinson currently sits at fourth in the ACC and 41st nationally while Vipond is sixth in the conference and 60th in the NCAA. The Hokies are averaging 2.43 blocks per set which ranks them fifth in the conference and 53rd nationally.
 
Digs Leader
 
Logan Mosley continues to lead the ACC in total digs, posting 240 for Tech through her 14 matches played this season. She is also in the top 50 nationally, sitting in the 44th spot. Mosley has played in every set for the Hokies and has an average of 4.29 digs per set, which ranks her second in the conference.
 
On the Road
 
The Hokies have put up a 4-2 record away from Cassell Coliseum so far this season, competing in tournaments at Chattanooga and North Florida. Tech's two losses on the road came at the hands of North Florida (3-2) and Troy (3-1). The Hokies look to snap the three-game skid they are on as they make the trip to Boston College and Syracuse.
