CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team secured its sixth victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, taking down Chattanooga 3-2. Angel Robinson was dominant for the Hokies, registering 11 kills and tied a team-high with six block assists.
Virginia Tech was sound offensively in the first set, tallying 14 kills compared to only seven from Chattanooga en route to 25-19 set one win. The Hokies also had two blocks in the first set and 15 digs. Mara Perry received the start as setter, recording seven assists.
Chattanooga bounced back in the next two sets, taking the second set 25-17 and the tight third set 27-25. The Mocs had 15 kills in the third set, registering a .184 hitting percentage. Six different players tallied a kill for the Mocs in the third, with Coniah Davis leading the way with four.
The Hokies came out firing in the fourth set, posting a .414 hitting percentage and 13 kills as they tallied a 25-14 victory to push the match to a fifth set. At the net, Tech also had three blocks with Mekenzi Heckmann, Tasha Vipond and Robinson getting in on the action.
Defensively, eight different Hokies posted at least one dig in the fourth set and Perry had six assists while Brie Postema registered five.
Virginia Tech carried that momentum into the fifth set, taking the lead at 5-4 and not looking back. The Hokies would push the lead to 13-7 off a kill from Amanda Lowe and ultimately won the match as a kill by Griere Hughes ended the set for the Hokies sixth win.
Lowe made her Hokie debut, finishing the match with nine kills and two block assists. Hughes also had a solid match for Tech, recording 12 kills and nine digs. Perry ended her match with 24 assists, a season-high for the sophomore.
The Hokies wrap up the Chattanooga Classic at 5 p.m., taking on Tennessee Tech.
