Hokies suffer setback against Troy

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team suffered its second loss of the season Friday afternoon, taking a 3-1 loss to Troy. The Hokies jumped out early to win the first set but were unable to close as the Trojans came back to win the next three.
 
Marisa Cerchio was the leader for the Hokies in the first set, finishing with six kills and a block assist. Cera Powell and Angel Robinson also added three kills apiece. Virginia Tech hit .346 in the first set, with Talyn Jackson adding 14 assists and Mara Perry adding 12.
 
The final three sets were all Troy as the Trojans took the second and third set 25-22. The fourth set was a 25-14 Trojan win. Troy had its best offensive performance in the third set, tallying 15 kills and a .303 hitting percentage.
 
Cheyenne Hayes finished with 14 kills for the Trojans while Amara Anderson added 44 assists. For the Hokies, Cerchio ended the match with 11 total kills. Powell and Griere Hughes each added 10.
 
Virginia Tech held the advantage in blocks, totaling 11.5 blocks compared to only four from Troy. The Hokies also ended the match with a better reception percentage of .943 vs. .909 put up by Troy.
 
Logan Mosley ended her day with 20 digs and Hughes added 11. Jackson posted 20 assists, followed by Perry with 15.
 
The Hokies return to the court on Saturday, taking on host Chattanooga at Noon, followed by a 5 p.m. match against Tennessee Tech.
