MARSHALL
The Thundering Herd (1-0, 0-0 C-USA)) showed no signs of easing off the gas in their season opener on Thursday, downing JMU (0-1, 0-0 CAA), 6-1. Though the teams have met 15 times, this will be the first clash between Marshall and Virginia Tech (0-0-1, 0-0 ACC) since Chris Grassie took the reins of the squad from Huntington, W.V. in 2017.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
In Tech's 2-2 draw against Kansas City (0-0-1, 0-0 Summit) on Thursday, Landon Ameres and Tyler Taber grabbed their first career collegiate goals. Ameres, a sophomore, has been a solid presence off the bench for the Hokies over the last year. Taber's goal came less than two minutes into his first appearance for Virginia Tech.
UP FOR THE CHALLENGE
In their last five challenges against higher-ranked foes, the Hokies are 2-2-1, and four of those matches have gone to overtime. Virginia Tech's last victory over a No. 1 side came on September 22, 2017, against Notre Dame.
NEW FACES
Six Virginia Tech players made their debuts for the team on Thursday: Taber, Pol Monells, Carter Hensley, Conor Pugh, Danny Flores, and Declan Quill.
UP NEXT
The Hokies' impressive lineup of fixtures continues next weekend in Raleigh, N.C. against No. 13 UCF on Friday, and No. 10 Seton Hall on Sunday.
