BLACKSBURG – Competing in its final preseason tune-up match on Thursday evening, the Virginia Tech women's soccer team struck twice during the opening half of its friendly against Richmond as the Hokies went on prevail, 2-0, at Thompson Field.
After a neutral start to the match by both sides, Tech pounced on one of its early scoring opportunities, cashing in its corner from the left flag during the 15th minute. Senior midfielder Emily Gray curled her entry to the top of the six-yard box, where sophomore forward Tori Powell headed in the go-ahead ball for her second goal of the preseason.
Looking to double their lead before halftime, the Hokies managed to break through again during the 37th minute. Holly Rose Weber cleaned up her own rebound at the top of the 18-yard box, steering her strike through traffic to tack on Tech's insurance goal.
Rotating its keepers, the Hokies' defensive unit recorded its second clean sheet across as many preseason matches.
Statistics from preseason matches do not carry over into the formal NCAA season.
With a pair of 2-0 friendly wins in stow this week, Tech will turn its attention towards its regular season opener on Thursday, Aug. 19, against Liberty. Kickoff between the Hokies and the Flames is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Thompson Field, which is currently operating at 100 percent capacity.
