Tech Earns USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, KY. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced Monday that the Virginia Tech volleyball team earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2020-21 season. This is the third straight season, and the first under head coach Marci Byers, that Tech has received the award by the AVCA.

The award, which was started in 1992-1993, honors teams that average a GPA of 3.30 or higher for the academic year. This past season, 1,275 collegiate and high school teams earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award.

An all-time record 243 NCAA Division I women's teams were recognized, including eight ACC schools.

Tech excelled in the classroom during the fall of 2020, turning in its best semester in school history. A program-record 14 students were named to the Dean's List and 16 student-athletes had a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The Hokies posted a 3.72 spring semester GPA in 2021, another program record.

Earlier this year, 20 members of the 2020-21 team were named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll and former Hokie Kaity Smith was named to the 2020-21 All-Academic Team. The AVCA team award is the latest honor in an impressive run of academic achievements for the Hokies.
