Five Hokies receive All-ACC Academic accolades

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Virginia Tech women's golf team had five of its student-athletes on the 2021 All-ACC Academic Team, which was announced Thursday by the league office. Emily Mahar, Jessica Spicer, Keerattriya Foocharoen, Becca DiNunzio and Alyssa Montgomery made the list for the Hokies.

A two-time women's golf All-ACC Academic Team member, Mahar was one of two Tech golfers to make All-ACC for the first time in program history. The Brisbane, Australia native was second on the team with a 72.81 scoring average, which ranked 13th in the league.

She totaled five top-20 performances, including a season-best tie for fifth at the Clemson Invitational (-3). Ranked 72nd by Golfstat, Mahar finished at par-or-better eight times, counting four times in the red. Mahar is finishing up her degree in human development with an integrated health and wellness minor.

Spicer compiled a 76.67 scoring average as a graduate student for the Hokies, who advanced to their first-ever national championship in program history. Graduating with dual degrees in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, and psychology, Spicer tied for 14th at the Clemson Invitational behind a season-best, final-round 3-under 69.

It marked the second straight year both Mahar and Spicer received All-ACC Academic Team accolades.

Foocharoen, a consumer studies major, was third on the team in scoring average (73.90). She notched three top-20 showings and finished in the red at the Clemson Invitational to tie for ninth at 1-under 215. The Bangkok, Thailand native racked up seven par-or-better rounds and tied for 12th at the Stanford Regional with an even-par 213.

Along with her teammate Mahar, DiNunzio was also recognized on the All-ACC team. The sophomore led Tech with a 72.67 scoring average, which ranked ninth in the ACC. She notched a team-high 12 par-or-better rounds. DiNunzio, ranked 63rd by Golfstat, posted a team-high six top-20 finishes, including a sixth-place showing at the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate (4-under 212). The Norfolk, Virginia native is pursuing a degree in clinical neuroscience with a psychology minor.

A human nutrition, foods and exercise major, Montgomery recorded a 74.71 scoring average – fifth-best on the team. Her season-best finish came at the ACC Championship where she fired a 3-over 219 to tie for 16th. She fired four rounds in the 60s, including a season-best 6-under 66 in the opening round of the Valspar Augusta Invitational. Her 66 tied a school record for lowest round in relation to par. Montgomery signed for six rounds at par-or-better.

Tech tied Duke and Virginia for the most honorees this season. To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
