Okuda's 8-strikeout outing leads Virginia Tech past Georgetown 6-2

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Junior Ryan Okuda dominated on Wednesday, fanning eight Georgetown hitters over 5.1 innings of work to help propel the Virginia Tech Hokies past the Hoyas, 6-2.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Okuda tossed 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits and walking none for Virginia Tech (24-17). Sophomore Graham Firoved also made an impact on the mound for the Hokies, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Freshman Jack Hurley led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and four RBIs. Freshman Gavin Cross furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a triple.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Freshman Gehrig Ebel came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech and get them on the board.

The Hokies lost the lead they built in the third, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 2-1. The Virginia Tech offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Hurley, which brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Hokies.

Virginia Tech held Georgetown scoreless before building their lead to 6-2 in the eighth inning. The Hokies scored a run when Hurley drew a walk from junior Carter Bosch that scored freshman TJ Rumfield. The score remained 6-2 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech coasted to the win.
