DURHAM, N.C. --The Virginia Tech Hokies brought a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 2-1 to the Duke Blue Devils Sunday.
Sophomore Chris Gerard (2-2) got the ball to start for Virginia Tech (27-20, ) and took the loss. The southpaw went eight innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on nine hits, allowing one walk and striking out 10.
Sophomore Nick Holesa led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Sophomore Nick Biddison came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech and get them on the board. The Hokies were unable to hold the lead, as Duke scored two times over the remaining seven innings to grab the 2-1 win.
