STANFORD, Calif. — Three Virginia Tech women's golfers finished in the red to bolster the No. 14 Hokies to a 2-under 282 in Monday's opening round of the Stanford Regional. The three-day regional is being hosted by Stanford at the par 71, 6,291-yard Stanford Golf Course.

Tech is currently in second place through 18 holes, and is one of two teams in red figures – the other is Stanford, playing on its home course. The Cardinal leads the 18-team regional at 12-under 272. Third-ranked and top-seeded Wake Forest is in third at 2-over 286, while sixth-ranked Oklahoma State (287) and 10th-ranked Southern California (288) are fourth and fifth, respectively.

Behind a team-best five birdies, Alyssa Montgomery fired a 3-under 68 to pace three Hokies in red figures. It was the sophomore's sixth sub-par round of the season. After making the turn at 1-under, Montgomery stepped on the gas and birdied holes 1, 5 and 7 to post her second round in the 60s in the last three tries. She's tied for fourth, one shot off the lead.

Joining Montgomery in the 60s was junior Keerattriya Foocharoen, who charted a 2-under 69 and is tied for seventh. Foocharoen used a 3-under back nine to record her seventh round of par-or-better this season.

Emily Mahar fired a 1-under 70 and is tied for 12th. Like Foocharoen, the senior finished with four birdies on the day. Jessica Spicer (75) and Becca DiNunzio (76) are tied for 60th and 69th, respectively.

Tech has done most of its damage on par-5s thus far, leading the field at 12-under on those holes. The Hokies rank third in the field in birdies made (17).

Three golfers – Irene Kim (Northwestern), Maja Stark (Oklahoma State) and Sadie Englemann (Stanford) are tied at the top of the individual leaderboard at 4-under-par 67.

Tuesday's second round is set to begin at 9:50 a.m. PT for the Hokies. Tech will be paired with Stanford and Wake Forest.
