GREENSBORO, N.C. — Virginia Tech's Becca DiNunzio and Emily Mahar were voted to the 2021 All-ACC Women's Golf Team as announced by the league office Thursday afternoon. It's the first time in program history Tech had one of its golfers, let alone two, make the prestigious 15-member team.
The Hokies, ranked a program-best 14th in the country by Golfstat this week, have relied on DiNunzio and Mahar to lead the way for much of the 2021 season. Of Tech's five stroke-play tournaments, the duo has racked up an impressive nine top-20 showings and 15 par-or-better rounds.
DiNunzio paced the Hokies with her 72.53 scoring average, which ranked ninth in the ACC. The sophomore posted a team-high five top-20 finishes, including a sixth-place showing at the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate where she signed for a 4-under 212. At the ACC Championship, DiNunzio led Tech by tying for 11th at 1-over 217.
In her senior season with the Hokies, Mahar has not disappointed. She has totaled four top-20 performances, including a season-best tie for fifth at the Clemson Invitational (-3). The Brisbane, Australia, native finished in the red twice this spring. Her 72.93 scoring average is second on the team and 13th in the ACC.
Mahar is coming off a playoff victory at Tuesday's U.S. Women's Open qualifier at Belle Haven Country Club in Springfield, Virginia. The Aussie fired a 4-over 148 to force a three-way playoff where she went on to win. Mahar becomes just the second Hokie in program history to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open, joining Amanda Hollandsworth (2019). The 2021 edition of the championship is set for June 3-6 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California.
Duke, the 2021 ACC Champion, led all schools with four representatives on the all-conference team. Wake Forest (three), Florida State and Virginia Tech (two), and Clemson, Miami, Louisville and Virginia each had one to complete the 15-member team.
Florida State's Beatrice Wallin was recognized as the ACC Player of the Year after posting a 70.3 scoring average this season. She's the league's highest-ranked golfer at No. 9 according to Golfstat.
Nataliya Guseva of Miami and Dan Brooks of Duke won ACC Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively.
