Four Virginia Tech pitchers combine for shutout in 12-0 win over East Tennessee State

BLACKSBURG, Va. --Four pitchers combined to throw a shutout on Tuesday as the Virginia Tech Hokies blanked the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 12-0.

Junior Ryan Okuda started on the mound for Virginia Tech (22-15), going 4.2 shutout innings while giving up four hits, walking none, and striking out four. Freshman Griffin Green (2-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen and went 2.1 shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking none and striking out two.

Sophomore Kevin Madden led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and four RBIs. Freshman Gavin Cross furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Nick Biddison also helped out, going 1-for-4 for Virginia Tech with a triple, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies took the lead for good in the second, scoring for the first time in the inning. Virginia Tech got an RBI single from senior Tanner Thomas, scoring Madden from second base.

The Hokies then tacked on runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings, with their biggest output coming in the fifth when they scored six times. The big hits in that inning were a two-run single off the bat of Madden and a two-run double from Cross.
