Virginia Tech loses 11-4 to Georgia Tech despite late lead

BLACKSBURG, Va. --The No. 17 Virginia Tech Hokies took a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hang on and fell 11-4 to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sunday.

Senior Jaison Heard (3-2) came out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (20-12, 15-9) and took the loss. Junior Shane Connolly was a bright spot for the Hokies, starting the ballgame and throwing six innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on six hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Freshman Gavin Cross led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a walk and an RBI. Freshman TJ Rumfield provided a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Freshman Tanner Schobel also contributed, going 1-for-3 for Virginia Tech with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the third inning. Virginia Tech scored twice, with one run coming across on Rumfield's single.

The Yellow Jackets failed to push any runs across before the Hokies built on their lead in the fifth inning. Virginia Tech picked up two runs when a single from Schobel brought home freshman Jack Hurley and Cross, which brought the Hokies lead to 4-1. The Hokies were unable to hold the lead, as Georgia Tech scored 10 times over the remaining four innings to grab the 11-4 win.
