Lacrosse program falters at No. 8 Duke 13-7

DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team took on eighth-ranked Duke Saturday in Durham and fell by a score of 13-7 at Koskinen Stadium. The loss drops the Hokies to 4-9 on the season and 0-7 in the league.
 
Duke got off to a hot start leading 4-1 under after nine minutes and would add two more by the 16:12 mark. At that moment Tech inserted Angie Benson into the cage and she made an immediate impact, coming up with a save and started the clear that led to a goal, one of two consecutive for the Hokies.
 
Paige Petty scored with a diving effort in the closing seconds of the first half to make it an 8-4 game.
 


 
After the half, Tech came out and scored three of the game's next four goals, cutting the lead to 9-7 with 17 minutes to play with goals from Petty, Sarah Lubnow and Emma Crooks.
 
From there, the Blue Devils, (9-5, 4-5) would hold the Hokies scoreless while adding four more of their own. 
 
Caroline DeBellis and Katie Cronin each scored a hat trick and Maddie Jenner secured 12 draw controls.
 
GAME NOTES
•Virginia Tech is now 3-22 against Duke. 
•John Sung's record moves to 44-36 at Virginia Tech and 144-81 in his career as a head coach.
•Tech is 2-5 all-time on April 17.
