BLACKSBURG, Va. --Junior Ryan Okuda was mowing people down on Thursday, fanning nine Boston College hitters over 6.2 innings of work, but it was not enough as the No. 23 Virginia Tech Hokies lost to the Eagles 7-3.
In addition to his nine strikeouts, Okuda threw 6.2 innings, giving up one run on seven hits and walking one for Virginia Tech (13-9, 9-7).
In the batter's box, the Hokies were paced by sophomore Kevin Madden, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and an RBI. Freshman Jack Hurley put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Dayne Leonard also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies were trailing 6-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Hurley put Virginia Tech on the board with a two-out solo home run off junior M. Pelio.
The Hokies kept the deficit at 6-1 before closing the gap further in the fourth. Freshman TJ Rumfield came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech, which tightened the Eagles lead to 6-2.
Boston College built their lead to 7-2 before the Virginia Tech offense got going, reducing that lead to 7-3 in the sixth. The Hokies scored a run on Madden's two-out solo home run off Pelio. The Hokies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
