GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 22/19 Virginia Tech men's basketball had three ACC honorees on Monday, with Mike Young winning ACC Coach of the Year, Keve Aluma being named second-team All-ACC and Tyrece Radford being tabbed ACC honorable mention, as announced by the league office.
The 2020-21 All-ACC Team and awards were determined by a 75-person selection panel consisting of the league's 15 head coaches and 60 members of the media.
Young, no stranger to winning awards, picked up his first ACC Coach of the Year award and gives him eight conference Coach of the Year honors in his career, with him winning seven at the SoCon (four from the coaches' vote, three from the media vote). He also was on the Naismith Coach of the Year Late Season Watch List, announced on Feb. 19. He also went 4-0 against the AP's Top 25 at the time of the game.
Predicted to finish 11th in the ACC preseason standings, Tech (15-5, 9-4 ACC) exceeded expectations under Young's watch and ended up finishing third to claim the No. 3 seed in the 2021 New York Life ACC Tournament. With the three seed to its name, the Hokies claim a double bye, marking the first time they've earned one since the ACC expanded to 15 teams (2014) and tied the highest seed earned in the ACC Tournament (2007).
Aluma was named to the All-ACC second team after averaging 15.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and shooting 50.0 percent from the field. He was second in the ACC in free-throw attempts (105) and was second as well in free throws made (76). His 15.9 points per game was seventh best in the league and his 8.0 rebounds were fifth best. The redshirt junior racked up six double-doubles, the fourth most in the conference, and had five 20-point games this season.
Radford, who was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 18, was named ACC honorable mention following his stat line of 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Of his 97 rebounds he pulled down, about a third of those (33) were offensive. The Louisiana native had one double-double during the regular season and reached double figures scoring in nine games.
Young becomes the second coach at Tech to win ACC Coach of the Year and marks the third time a Tech coach has won (Seth Greenberg; 2004-05, 2007-08). Aluma becomes just the sixth Hokie to be named second-team All-ACC and first since 2019 when Kerry Blackshear Jr. did so.
