BLACKSBURG – No. 24 Virginia Tech baseball fell in its third game, 9-6, against the No. 25 Tar Heels on Sunday at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
The Hokies (7-2, 4-2 ACC) lost to the Tar Heels (7-3, 3-3) on Sunday, but won the series the night before with a 9-6 win over UNC.
Anthony Simonelli (1-0) got the start for the Hokies, his third start of the season. He pitched 4.0 innings allowing just two walks and throwing six strikeouts.
Tech scored five runs on three hits. Tanner Schobel and Jack Hurley both hit home runs against the Tar Heels on Sunday, their second home runs of the series.
THE GAME
The Tar Heels took a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Hokies added five runs in the bottom of the second on home runs from Schobel and Hurley. UNC tied the game in the top of the third inning on a single and took the lead in the sixth inning on a home run.
Tech's pitching staff threw seven strikeouts on the day, breaking the school's record for most strikeouts in an ACC series.

- Hurley and Schobel both hit two home runs against the Tar Heels this weekend, the first two home runs of their careers.

Tech will face the VCU Rams in a two-game stint starting on Tuesday, March 9 at 4 p.m. at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
