In their first outing of the spring, the No. 13 Hokies (4-2-2, 3-1-2) pulled out a 2-0 victory over then-No. 5 Coastal Carolina. Senior Jacob Labovitz opened up the scoring in the first half by rounding the keeper and finishing in an open net after a tantalizing ball from Welnilton Da Silva Jr. left the Chanticleers' back line unsure. Junior Sivert Haugli doubled the score by slotting home a penalty into the bottom right corner after sophomore Daniel Starr was taken down in the box by the keeper.

Tech is one of four ranked ACC teams in the latest (3/2) United Soccer Coaches poll, joining No. 1 Clemson, No. 4 Pitt, and No. 6 Wake Forest.

Duke (2-7-2, 2-4) is coming off a 0-0 draw with then-No. 18 UNC-Wilmington. The Blue Devils have struggled to get going on the scoresheet, as they are yet to record a goal in three games in 2021. Most of the movement comes from the midfield duo of graduate student Jack Doran and freshman Nick Pariona, as they account for 11 of 26 points Duke has accumulated through 11 games.

The overall series between Virginia Tech and Duke has been dominated by the Blue Devils, however the Hokies came away with a 2-1 victory in the last meeting on November 1, 2019. Tech looks to win back-to-back fixtures against Duke for the first time in program history.
