No. 23 Hokies prepare to face Eagles at home

BLACKSBURG – Coming off of a sweep against then-ranked No. 15 Pitt, No. 23 Virginia Tech baseball is preparing to face Boston College this weekend starting on Thursday at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park with all games being broadcasted on the ACC Network Extra.

The Hokies (13-8, 9-6 ACC) and Eagles (12-11, 3-9) will meet for the first time since May 6, 2019. Tech leads the all-time series 26-21 and is 2-3 in its last five meetings.   

The Hokies have swept the Eagles four times since joining the ACC, the last being on April 2, 2017.

ON THE CALL

The matchup will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, with Jon Laaser (play-by-play) and Andrew Wells (analyst) on the call all weekend, while Bryant Johnson will broadcast on Virginia Tech Sports Network.

LAST TIME OUT

The Hokies had a strong outing in Pittsburgh despite a rain delay on Sunday. Peyton Alford (1-1) and Matthew Siverling (3-0) both dominated on Friday, allowing only six combined hits and 14 strikeouts. Kevin Madden also reached 100 career hits in the win.

Anthony Simonelli (2-0) got his first start off of an injury and tossed 5.0 solid innings on Saturday. He struck out seven batters and only allowed one run. The Hokies had three doubles in the win on Saturday.

Shane Connolly (0-1) got the start on Sunday, his second ACC start of the season. He struck out six batters and allowed one run in 4.0 innings. Carson Jones got his first home run of the season on Sunday.


PLAYER TO WATCH

Connolly has now started two games for the Hokies this season against Clemson and Pitt and was recently named one of 10 breakout stars this season from Baseball America. Connolly has 38 strikeouts and boasts a 2.19 ERA, ranking third amongst ACC pitchers.
