Hokies tie for ninth at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — For the second time this spring, Mark Lawrence Jr. finished at par or better in a 54-hole tournament to lead the Virginia Tech men's golf team at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, which ended Monday afternoon at the UNC Finley Golf Course (par 72, 7,242 yards).
 
The graduate student fired an even-par 216 to tie for 17th in the field of 87 golfers. His final-round, 2-under 70 was his eighth sub-par round of the season. Lawrence, Jr. led the Hokies with 13 birdies, one more than freshman Charlie Hanson.
 
As a team, Tech fired rounds of 292, 298 and 292 to tie Georgia State for ninth at 882. Tournament host and 17th-ranked North Carolina led wire-to-wire in capturing the team title at 28-under 836. Campbell was the runner-up at 10-under 854.
 
The Tar Heels' Peter Fountain carded a 15-under 201 to earn medalist honors.
 
Tech has a quick turnaround as the Hokies are back in action Saturday, April 3 through Sunday, April 4 at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational. The 54-hole event will be hosted by Augusta at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
