Tech battles No. 2 Syracuse, falls 17-10 after second half drought

The Virginia Tech Hokies held a 7-5 lead late in the first half at the Carrier Dome, but the second-ranked Orange went on a 9-0 run on either side of the intermission to take a commanding lead that they would not squander, winning the contest 17-10.

 

The loss drops Virginia Tech to 3-6 (0-4 ACC) on the season ahead of a return to Thompson Field on Saturday, April 3.

 

Syracuse, (6-0, 4-0), tied the game just before the half at seven, and opened the second period with seven straight goals to open up the lead. The Orange were led by Megan Carney who scored six times and Meaghan Tyrell who tallied four goals in the game.

 

For the Hokies, midfielders Emma Crooks and Paige Petty did most of the damage with Crooks. Scoring a first half hat trick and finishing with four goals. Petty, added two goals and had four draw controls in the game. 

 

Tech's defense allowed 41 total shots, but goalie Angie Benson made 11 saves, her third game with double digit saves of the season. Mary Clare McCarthy had three caused turnovers, a season high.

 

Grace Nelson, Sarah Lubnow, Sara Goodwin and Caroline Allen each added goals for the Hokies.

•The Orange assisted on 12 of their 17 goals. Tech had two assisted goals.

•Ground balls were even at 16.

•Tech was outdrawn 10-19.

•Virginia Tech is now 1-12 against Syracuse. 

•John Sung's record moves to 43-33 at Virginia Tech and 143-78 in his career as a head coach.

•Tech is 4-4 all-time on March 27 and 0-2 in conference play on that date.
