Hokies come up short at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL - In its final road outing of the weekend, the Virginia Tech volleyball team fell 3-0 to Boston College on Sunday afternoon inside Power Gym. 

Tech moves to 6-9 on the season and 5-9 in the conference. The Eagles improve to 3-12 overall and 2-12 in ACC play. Boston College had a successful weekend as it won consecutive outings against Miami and Tech as they bounced back from four straight losses before the weekend. 

Senior Clare Naughton was the key performer for Boston College as she notched a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Middle blocker Amaka Chukwujekwu added nine kills and sophomore Gabby McCaa racked up seven for the Eagles. Setters Sophia Lambros and Grace Penn each dished out 19 assists which helped the Eagles reach 42 assists on the day compared to the Hokies 31. 

Boston College got after it on the defensive end as it scooped up 46 total digs. Naughton had a team-high 13 digs and Libero Anna Murphy added 11. As a team, the Eagles came up with 14 block assists and held the Hokies to a hitting percentage of .160.

The Hokies came up short but on the bright side outside hitter Kaity Smith came up with a team-high 10 kills and had a near double-double as she racked up nine digs as well. Outside hitter Ashely Homan had nine kills and middle blocker Angel Robinson registered five of her own. Senior Kylie Thomas had another strong performance as she scooped up 13 digs. 

MATCH NOTES 
 

  • Outside hitter Homan now has 151 kills this season which is second on the team.

 

  • Senior Kylie Thomas recorded 13 digs giving her 31 over her last two contests.  

 

  • Setter Brie Postema now has 122 assists over her last six outings.

The Hokies will hit the road again to Clemson, South Carolina for two outings against Pitt on April 2 at 5 p.m. ET and then Clemson on April 3 at 5 p.m. ET inside Jervey Gym.
