Hokie ClubGREENSBORO - The Virginia Tech women's swim and dive team wrapped up the NCAA Championships in 21st place with 55 points on Saturday evening marking the second highest overall finish and most points scored at in school history.
Emma Atkinson placed fourth overall in the 200 backstroke, earning her second individual All-American honor of the competition. The freshman broke her own school record twice on Saturday, first in prelims with a time of 1:51.47 then again in finals at 1:50.43. Atkinson earned Honorable Mention All-American in the 100 backstroke on Friday evening.
The 400 freestyle relay team earned Honorable Mention All-American and broke a school record on Saturday evening. The team of Sarah Shackelford, Joelle Vereb, Reka Gyorgy and Emma Atkinson swam a time of 3:14.07, placing 11th overall in the event.

"I am very proud of our girls, our team did an amazing job in the meet and throughout the season. We did very well at ACCs and NCAAs was a very good meet for us. We finished 21st, had five school records, two All-American Honors and a few Honorable Mention All-American Honors. It gives us a good understanding of our program moving forward. Finishing 21st is the second highest in school history and 55 points is the highest amount in school history.
Coming into NCAAs and breaking so many records after breaking five at ACCs is a good testament to how competitive our swimmers are. We finished the 400 freestyle relay improving by over a second from the previous school record set at ACCs and jumped from 18th place to 11th overall. It is awesome to see. I am very happy with our performance and excited to see what we can do in the future."

DAY THREE
GREENSBORO - Reka Gyorgy and Emma Atkinson both earned All-American honors on the third day of the NCAA Championships in Greensboro.
Gyorgy placed eighth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:08.69 earning her All-American status. The senior made Honorable Mention All-American yesterday evening in the 500-yard freestyle, placing 12th overall. This is Gyorgy's second 400 IM All-American honor, her first was her freshman year in the 400 IM in 2017. In Saturday's competition Gyorgy will be competing in the 200 butterfly.
In her first NCAA individual appearance, freshman Atkinson earned Honorable Mention All-American in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.65. In Thursday's competition Atkinson crushed her own school record in the 100 backstroke during her leadoff split in the 400 medley relay. Atkinson will be competing in the 200 backstroke in Saturday's competition.
The Hokies will resume competition at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning with the 1,650-yard Freestyle, 200-yard Backstroke, 100-yard Freestyle, 200-yard Butterfly, Platform Diving Event and 400-yard Freestyle Relay.

GREENSBORO - Reka Gyorgy earned Honorable Mention All-American in the 500-yard freestyle during the second day of the NCAA Championships in Greensboro.
Gyorgy swam a time of 4:42.04 placing 12th overall in the competition. This is her third honorable mention honor, following her acknowledgement in the 400 IM in 2018 and 800 freestyle relay in 2017.
Freshman Emma Atkinson broke the school record in the 100 backstroke during her leadoff split in the 400 medley relay this evening. Atkinson swam a time of 51.44, breaking her previous time set earlier this year that tied for first at 51.86. This marks Atkinson's ninth school record including five individual and four relay times.
Competition will resume Friday morning at 10 a.m. with preliminary events. The Hokies will be competing in the 400 IM, 200-yard Freestyle, 100-yard Backstroke and Three-meter Diving event.

DAY ONE
GREENSBORO – The No. 17 Virginia Tech women's swim and dive team began the 2021 NCAA Championships on a high note with a new school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
The team of Emma Atkinson, Sarah Shackelford, Reka Gyorgy and Loulou Vos swam a time of 7:02.73, breaking the previous record of 7:03.10 set in 2017. The Hokies finished in 14th place overall in the event.
The relay team improved from their previous best of 7:03.50 which they swam at the 2021 ACC Championships in February, earning them third place in the event.
Competition will resume Thursday morning with prelims starting at 10 a.m.. The Hokies will be competing in the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 400 Medley Relay and 1 meter diving event.
