CLEMSON, S.C. -- Junior Shane Connolly dominated on Sunday, striking out 11 Clemson hitters over seven innings of work, but it was not enough as the No. 25 Virginia Tech Hokies lost to the Tigers 4-2.
In addition to his 11 strikeouts, Connolly went seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and walking none for Virginia Tech (10-8, 6-6).
At the plate, the Hokies were paced by freshman Dayne Leonard, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Fritz Genther put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. Freshman Tanner Schobel came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech and get them on the board.
After the Tigers rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Hokies came back to retake the lead in the eighth inning. Virginia Tech picked up a run on Leonard's leadoff home run off of freshman Gilbert, which brought the Hokies lead to 2-1.
