BLACKSBURG — Emily Gray recorded a brace in guiding the Virginia Tech women's soccer team to a 3-0 nonconference win over William & Mary, Saturday evening at Thompson Field.
The Hokies improved to 7-8 with the win, while the Tribe (0-1-2) suffered its first defeat of the season.
"I'm proud of our team and our effort in getting a result today – posting a shutout is great for us," head coach Chugger Adair said. "I thought we had moments where we played really good stuff, then some other moments where we still showed some of our rust.
"We're looking forward to building off this game as we get into Liberty next week. I'm proud of how resilient and determined our group has been to maintain continued growth."
Gray got the scoring going in the 30th minute on great build-up from the back. Victoria Haugen initiated the attack when she launched a centering pass that Tori Powell redirected to Gray. The Sewell, N.J., native collected and pushed forward before she slotted her fifth goal of the season into the lower-right corner of goal.
Just over two minutes later, Molly Feighan found the back of the net for the second time in her junior campaign. The opportunity was generated off a free kick taken by Gray that the Tribe was unable to clear, and Feighan was able to pounce on the loose ball and bury it for the Hokies' 2-0 advantage.
Gray tacked on a PK in the 57th minute for the final tally.
Alia Skinner notched the third shutout of her freshman season. She faced 15 shots – recording six saves. The Hokies also manufactured 15 shots, led by Gray's four attempts.
Tech is next in action April 1 when the squad travels to Liberty for a 6 p.m. kickoff with the Flames.
