Tech falls to Virginia, 2-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men's soccer team fell to Virginia on the road this afternoon, 2-0.

Two goals within the first 13 minutes of the second half separated the two sides. A ball played by the Cavalier's (6-5-1, 2-1 ACC) Nick Berghold to the back post found Kaya Ignacio, whose shot bounced off Matt Zambetti and the post into the goal in the 47th-minute. In the 58th-minute, Kevin Ogudugu was able to hit a half-volley slightly outside the box to double Virginia's lead.

The Hokies (4-5-2, 0-3 ACC) looked dangerous in the first half. Perhaps the best opportunity of the game came in the 23rd-minute when Jakob Bluemler stormed from the right wing into the box to get off a shot that was saved. The ensuing played led to a shot from Kristo Strickler, who made his first appearance of the spring for the Hokies, that rattled off the crossbar.

A turning point in the game came early when defender Welnilton Da Silva Jr. was subbed off in the 20th-minute after picking up an early yellow card. In Tech's previous three games, the Brazilian had played the entire match against Coastal Carolina and No. 1 Clemson, and 73 minutes against Duke.

For the ninth time in 11 games this season, Virginia Tech recorded more shots than its opponent, and for only the second time this campaign, the Hokies were held scoreless.

The Hokies will be back in action at Thompson Field on Saturday, March 27 to host Pitt.
