Women's swim and dive set for 2021 NCAA Championships

BLACKSBURG – 13 members of the No.17 Virginia Tech women's swim and dive team will travel to Greensboro to compete in the 2021 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 17-20.

COMPETING FOR THE HOKIES

The Hokies have nine athletes competing in individual events over the course of the meet. 
 
Teagan Moravek (1M, 3M)
Moravek placed first in the 1-meter diving event and 2nd in the 3-meter diving event to qualify her for NCAAs at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships. 
 
Izzi Mroz (1M, 3M, Platform)
Mroz punched a ticket this past weekend at NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in all three events. She finished fifth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and 10th in the platform event. 

Reka Gyorgy (500 FR, 400 IM, 200 FL) 
Coming off two bronze medals at ACCs, senior Reka Gyorgy will be competing for the Hokies in her fourth NCAA Championships. Gyorgy finished in sixth place overall and first place in Greensboro in the 400 IM at the 2020 Toyta US Open earlier this season. 
 
Emma Atkinson (100 BK, 200 BK) 
The freshman set a new school record in both the 100 backstroke (51.86) and the 200 backstroke (1:51.64) at the ACC Championships in February. She was also a member of the 800 freestyle relay team that placed third at ACCs. 
 
Caroline Bentz (200 IM, 100 BK, 200 BK) 
At ACCs Bentz broke the school record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.99. Bentz was also a member of the record breaking 400 freestyle relay team who placed fourth at with a time of 3:15.81. 
 
Chase Travis ( 500 FR, 1650 FR) 
A member of the 2021 Junior National team, Travis has made impressive strides in her first year with the Hokies. Travis placed fourth in the 1650 freestyle (16:14.41) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:44.81) at the ACC Championships. 
 
Abby Larson (100 FR)
The Senior will be competing in the 100 freestyle, an event she placed fifth in at ACCs with a time of 48.72. Larson was also a member of two record setting relays, the 400 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay. 

Sarah Shackelford (100 FR, 200 FR) 
The sophomore earned her first medals at ACCs this season in the 100 freestyle (48.42) and as a member of the 800 freestyle relay team. Shackelford was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that holds the current school record in the event. 

Brooke Travis (1650 FR) 
Travis qualified for the 1650 freestyle at the UNC last chance invite with a time of 16:18.25. Earlier this season, Travis competed at the Toyota US Open, placing sixth in the event in the Greensboro location of the meet.

HEAD COACH SERGIO LOPEZ MIRO
"I am very excited for our women's team to compete at NCAAs, they have done an amazing job this year. To have 13 athletes compete at is a big testament to how the team is evolving. I am very thankful for all the coaches, student athletes and support staff. Our athletes have been relaxed and have been training well and I am really looking forward to seeing what our divers and swimmers can do. I believe we can have the best meet Virginia Tech has ever had at NCAAs. I am thankful we have the opportunity to swim nationally at the highest level." 

Competition will begin Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. with the 800 freestyle relay, coverage will be available through ESPN3 (linked above).
