Lawrence, Jr. leads Tech at General Hackler Championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — For the second straight tournament, Mark Lawrence Jr. led the Virginia Tech men's golf team as play concluded Tuesday at the General Hackler Championship hosted by Coastal Carolina. The graduate student finished at 5-over 221 to tie for 29th in the three-day event held at the 7,233-yard, par 72 The Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
 
Five teams entered the tournament ranked in the nation's Top-50, including team champion NC State. The 32nd- ranked Wolfpack got off to a blistering start in posting a seven-shot victory over 28th-ranked North Florida. NC State fired an 11-under 853 to pace three teams from the ACC in the top four of the team standings. The Hokies placed 15th.
 
North Florida's Nick Gabrelcik, ranked 13th in the nation, carded an 11-under 205 to edge John Murphy of Louisville by two shots.
 
Up next for Tech is the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, which is scheduled for March 27-28 at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
