No. 18 Hokies drop Game 3 to Seminoles

BLACKSBURG – No. 18 Virginia Tech baseball lost its first ACC series with a 14-7 loss against Florida State on Sunday at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

The Hokies (9-5, 5-4 ACC) lost to the Seminoles (6-6, 4-5) despite 10 hits on the day.

Noah Johnson (0-0) pitched 2.1 innings for Tech on Sunday, allowing just one earned run and one strikeout in his fifth appearance for the Hokies.

Gavin Cross led the team with two hits and three RBIs, including a home run in the fifth inning. Carson Jones also had two hits for the Hokies.

THE GAME

The Seminoles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Cross hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to give the Hokies their first run of the day to make it 4-1.

Florida State scored three more runs in the fourth inning, followed by Cross' home run in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Holesa tripled in the bottom of the ninth inning, the first of his career, to bring in two runs. The Hokies added four runs in the bottom of the ninth to bring the score to 14-7.

NOTES

- Cross' two hits mark the 14th game of his career with two or more hits. His last time with two hits was in Game 1 against the Seminoles.

- Cross' three RBIs also mark the second time in his career with three RBIs in a single game. The last time was on Feb. 21 in Game 2 against Kent State.

- Jones has had two career multi-hit games including today against Florida State. His last was against on Feb. 23 in the 22-2 win against Radford.
 

UP NEXT

Tech will play host to UNC Greensboro (10-4) on Tuesday for a single-game matchup starting at 4 p.m. at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park with the game being broadcasted on ACC Network Extra.
