Hokies fall to top-ranked Tar Heels 22-1 at Thompson Field

BLACKSBURG – The No. 14 Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell to the nation's top-ranked team the North Carolina Tar Heels 22-1 Saturday in their return to play after the team paused activities. The loss drops the Hokies to 2-3 (0-3) on the season ahead of a stretch of three nonconference games. 
 
North Carolina (7-0, 3-0) began the game with a goal inside of the first minute from Ally Mastroianni and stretched the advantage to 8-0 by the first media timeout. Tech got on the board as time expired in the firs frame with their only tally of the afternoon from sophomore attacker Jacelyn Lazore who scooped up the rebound from her own shot and found the back of the net with her second attempt.
 
The Heels were led by Jamie Ortega who scored seven points and Katie Hoeg who recorded six points.

•Carolina held the advantage in draws (16-8), shots (31-11) and saves (8-5).
 
GAME NOTES
•Virginia Tech is now 0-30 against the Tar Heels 
•John Sung's record moves to 42-31 at Virginia Tech and 142-76 in his career as a head coach.
•Tech is 1-6 all-time on March 13 and 0-4 in conference play.
Kacie Hanson, Sophie Student and Sydney Golini each made their first collegiate starts in the game. That group combined for three caused turnovers and six draw controls.
•Defender Lizzie Lohrer made her first start of 2021. She caused two turnovers and had two ground balls.
