Hokies come up short against No. 14 Notre Dame

TALLAHASSEE – Inside Tully Gym, the Virginia Tech volleyball team fell short 3-0 against No.14 Notre Dame on Saturday in its first contest since late October. 

The Hokies fall to 5-5 on the season and 4-5 in conference. The Fighting Irish improve to 10-2 overall and 9-2 in ACC play. Notre Dame bounces back from its 3-2 loss to Florida State yesterday and earns its sixth straight victory against Tech. 

The Fighting Irish saw strong performances from all over the floor including junior Charley Niego who recorded a near double-double with eight kills and eight digs along with freshman Aubrey Hamiltion who tallied 11 kills and four digs. Setter Zoe Nunez notched a double-double with 29 assists and 11 digs. Nunez also came up with 2 aces. 

Defensively, Notre Dame collected more digs than the Hokies by a margin of 46-36. As a team, the Fighting Irish registered two blocks compared to Techs zero which marks one of the first matches all season that the Hokies did not record a block. 

Despite the loss, sophomore Cera Powell notched her season high in kills with eight on the outing. Outside Hitter Kaity Smith had an all-around performance with six kills, nine digs and two aces. Outside hitter Ashley Homan racked up a team-high 11 kills along with eight digs for a near double-double. 


MATCH NOTES 
 

  • Junior Sarah Jane Lynch notched her career high in digs with 11 on the day.

 

  • Freshman Mara Perry dished out a career-high eight assists against Notre Dame.

 

  • Homan now has exactly 100 kills on the season after 11 today against the Fighting Irish.

 

  • Smith scooped up nine digs against Notre Dame which got her to 102 total for the season.
