Hokies open spring slate with a pair of matches

BLACKSBURG – In its first contest since late October, the Virginia Tech volleyball team will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. for a contest against No.14 Notre Dame on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET inside Tully Gym. Tech will then take on Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in Tully Gym with coverage available through the ACC Network Extra.

Last fall, the Hokies and new head coach Marci Byers had an impressive debut run as Tech finished with a winning record at 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the ACC. Tech also notched wins over North Carolina and No.14 Duke for its seventh-ranked win in school history. The Hokies also swept their in-state rivals, Virginia, in the season series.
 
The Hokies trail Notre Dame 8-4 in the overall series between the two programs. The Fighting Irish have won the last five meetings against Tech with the Hokies' last win coming in 2015 which was a 3-0 success. Notre Dame sits at 9-1 on the season and 8-1 in conference play. The Fighting Irish are 3-0 since starting back up in February including back-to-back sweeps over NC State & Miami. 
 
Florida State is off to a roaring start as it has won seven consecutive matches since returning to play in February. The Seminoles now sit at 8-3 on the season and 4-3 in ACC play and are coming off two straight sweeps over Duke. 
 
NUMBERS TO KNOW FROM THE FALL

  • Kaity Smith moved into 14th all-time at Tech in kills with a total of 1041 in her career. 

 

  • Freshman Brie Postema finished the fall ranked fourth in the ACC in aces per set with an average of 0.42.

 

  • Many firsts came in the victory over No.14 Duke in late October. It was the first win over a ranked opponent for our team this season and the first road win of the season. It was also their first-ever win inside Cameron Indoor.
