HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team defeated Marshall, 4-3, on the road Wednesday afternoon.
After dropping the doubles point, the Hokies (3-8, 0-5 ACC) had to rally against the Thundering Herd (3-4) in singles.
Tech opened up its scoring when freshman Katie Andreini made quick work of her opponent on Court 5, winning 6-0, 6-0. Senior Nina Sorkin doubled the lead for the Hokies with a strong 6-2, 6-1 victory on Court 4. Graduate student Shene Disbergen extended the lead with another straight set win for Hokies on Court 6, 6-2, 6-3.
After Marshall picked up two wins, the match came down to freshman Tamara Barad Itzhaki on Court 1 for Virginia Tech. After narrowly dropping the first set, Barad Itzhaki stormed back in the second set, and the third set came down to the wire. The freshman was able to convincingly handle her opponent in the tiebreaker and sealed the match, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6.
The Hokies road trip will continue on Saturday when they face in-state rivals No. 14 Virginia (8-2, 4-1).
