CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Virginia Tech baseball moves to 4-1 on the season with their first loss on Saturday night against No. 6 Miami (Fla.), 3-0, at Alex Rodriguez Park and Mark Light Field.
The Hokies (4-1, 1-1 ACC) beat the Hurricanes (3-2, 1-1 ACC) in Game 1 on Friday night, their first win against the 'Canes since 2016.
Chris Gerard (1-1) got the start for the Hokies, his first start since the Kent State double header. Gerard tossed six innings allowing three runs and striking out four batters.
TJ Rumfield and Tanner Thomas both recorded two hits in the loss, Thomas' first multi-hit game since Feb. 23, 2020.
THE GAME
Miami jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Hokies were unable to put a run on the board. The game consisted of a constant pitching duel between Tech and Miami with no one scoring after the first inning.
The Hokies were able to post five hits in the game and Tech pitching struck out seven batters.
NOTES
- Thomas' multi-hit game was the 13th of his career.
- The Hokies have only allowed six runs against Miami, five being earned.
- Jaison Heard's two strikeouts against Miami in Game 2 bring his career total to 59.
