BLACKSBURG — On the heels of its first team title since 2016, the Virginia Tech men's golf team heads to famed Pinehurst No. 2 (par 70 / 7,125 yards) for the Wake Forest Invitational. The 54-hole event runs Monday-Tuesday in Pinehurst, N.C.
The Hokies, who fired a 28-under 836 to win the Oldfield Invitational in their last time out, join 10 other teams to comprise the tournament field. In addition to Tech and Wake Forest, Boston College, Duke, NC State, North Carolina and Virginia will represent the ACC contingent in Pinehurst.
On top of winning the team race, the Hokies' Daniel Azallion topped the individual leaderboard at Oldfield. His 9-under 207 secured the sophomore's first collegiate victory by one shot. Azallion will be playing in the top spot for Tech this week.
Mark Lawrence Jr. notched the sixth top-5 finish of his Hokie career by tying for third at Oldfield. The graduate student returns to a place he is quite familiar with. The Richmond, Va., native competed in the 2019 US Amateur that was contested at Pinehurst.
In the third position this week and making his debut in the starting lineup will be Charlie Hanson. The freshman showed promise while competing as an individual three weeks ago. Hanson carded the most birdies in the field (16) en route to tying for third at 6-under 210.
Bradley de Beer, who will also be making his season debut in the Tech starting lineup, and Drew Brockwell round out those who qualified for Pinehurst.
Monday's first round begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun, with continuous play into round two. Tee times for Tuesday's final round begin at 7:30 a.m.
