GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Sarah Shackelford earned her first ACC medal in the 100 freestyle on Saturday evening on the final day of the 2021 ACC Championships.
Shackelford swam a personal best of 48.42, earning her a bronze medal and a spot on the podium for the very first time.
Freshman Emma Atkinson continued to perform well breaking her second school record of the weekend in the 200 backstroke. Atkinson crushed the previous record, which she set earlier this season, by over a second. On Friday evening Atkinson tied the school record for the 100 backstroke at 51.86.
The team of Shackelford, Abby Larson, Atkinson and Caroline Bentz also set a new school record in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:15.81, beating the previous time of 3:16.00 set in 2018. The team placed fourth in the event.
The No. 15 Hokies placed fourth overall in the meet totaling 832 points, improving from placing eighth the past two years scoring 469 points in 2020. The Hokies fell in stiff competition to No. 2 Virginia, No. 11 NC State and No. 12 Louisville.

DAY THREEGREENSBORO, N.C. – Reka Gyorgy found the podium for the third time this week earning her third bronze medal on Friday evening in Greensboro at the 2021 ACC Championships.
Gyorgy swam a time of 4:04.77 in the 400IM, earning her third bronze medal of the meet. Along with the 400IM, Gyorgy has a bronze medal in the 500 freestyle and 800 free relay.
Freshman Emma Atkinson tied the school record in the 100 backstroke at 51.86 which was set by Klaudia Nazieblo in 2017. Atkinson beat her previous presonal best of 52.03 which she swam at the UNC Janice Hape Dowd Invitational in December.
The relay team of Atkinson, Joelle Vereb, Karisa Franz and Sarah Shackelford placed fourth, clocking in the second best time in school history at 3:33.18.
The Hokies currently sit in fourth place overall with a total score of 554 points. Tech is behind Virginia in first, NC State in second and Louisville in third.
The final day of competition will resume Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with coverage available through ACC Network Extra.

DAY TWO
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Caroline Bentz along with the 200 free relay team set new school records on Thursday evening in Greensboro at the second day of the ACC Championships.
Bentz took first place in the 200 IM B finals with a time of 1:56.99, beating the previous school record set in 2017 by teammate Reka Gyorgy (1:57.11). The women's 200 free relay also broke a school record, taking fourth in the event. The team of Joelle Vereb, Abby Larson, Anna Landon and Bentz clocked in at a time of 1:28.96, defeating the pervious record set in 2009 of 1:29.29.
Gygory earned her second bronze medal of the week in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:40.10. This time is a personal best for Gyorgy, taking the place of her previous time which was the third best in school history.
Noah Zawadzki took fourth place in the men's 3M with a score of 395.15, following his fourth place finish in the 1M on Wednesday afternoon.
Competition will resume tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the women's 100 butterfly.

DAY ONE
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Women's 800 free relay team found the podium on Wednesday evening at the 2021 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships.
The team of Emma Atkinson, Sarah Shackelford, Loulou Vos and Reka Gyorgy placed third with a time of 7:03.50. This time clocks in at the second fastest time in school history and crushed the Hokies time from the 2020 ACC's by just short of 10 seconds.
The women's 200 medley relay also hit a top-2 program time at 1:38.08. The team of Atkinson, Landon, Vereb and Shackelford placed eighth.
Noah Zawadzki took fourth place in the men's 1M with a score of 364.20. Zawadzki will compete in the 3M tomorrow afternoon.
The Hokies will resume competition tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m.
