Smith added to Hokies staff

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women's tennis head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Holdren is pleased to announce the hiring of James Smith to fill the volunteer assistant coach role for the Hokies.
 
Smith, a native of Ridgewood, N.J., joins the Tech following stints as the assistant men's tennis coach at UConn and the volunteer assistant coach for both the men's and women's teams at Trinity College.
 
"We are very excited to add James to our coaching staff," Zawacki-Holdren said. "James has a terrific range of experiences in tennis and a passion and knowledge for the game. His work ethic and positivity will definitely be a great addition to our program and we look forward to working with him!"
 
While at UConn, Smith assisted in on-campus recruiting efforts and offered match analysis for the team, along with helping player's improve their hitting mechanics.
 
Prior to his time coaching in Connecticut, Smith was the Tennis Director at the Bay View Association in Bay View, Michigan. In this role, Smith oversaw all tennis operations, including organizing tournaments and training athletes.
 
Smith's stepped into collegiate tennis as the assistant men's tennis coach at Glendale College in 2018, where he assisted in recruiting and technical instruction.
 
Smith graduated from Nichols College in 2017 with a degree in Business. While at Nichols, he was a part of the Bisons tennis team and a two-year team captain.
