TEMPE, Ariz. – Virginia Tech men's tennis freshman Hugo Maia was recognized as the UTR ITA Player of the Week on Wednesday afternoon.
Maia, a native of Braga, Portugal, posted a 12.54 UTR score last week in outings against No. 19 Kentucky, ODU, and MTSU.
Against the Wildcats, Maia downed freshman Joshua Lapadat, ranked No. 123 in the country and No. 7 on the ITA Top 10 Newcomers list, in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Earlier in the week, the rookie defeated ODU's Nicola Vidal, 6-1, 7-5. Teamed up with sophomore Matthis Ross in doubles against MTSU on Sunday, the Maia and his partner clinched the doubles point for the Hokies.
Maia sits at 3-0 on season, playing all matches on Court 4. In his first match of the season against No. 2 North Carolina, Maia defeated No. 100 in Josh Peck by retirement.
UTR Player of the Week Criteria
The UTR ITA Player of the Week honors a collegiate tennis player whose increase in UTR rating throughout the previous week was indicative of his/her high level of performance,
including notable wins such as clinching matches and upsets.
